Silver Proof

If you are looking to invest in the absolute highest standard of silver, silver proofs are a great option. Silver proofs are often struck for special occasions, as part of a limited run or set. This only adds to the value of the silver. Although the silver in proof coins is of the same quality and fineness as all other coins and rounds, proof coins are processed differently and much less frequently. Proof coins are also guaranteed to be in the most pristine of conditions, with absolutely no wear. Like other uncirculated coins, they do not have the nicks or abrasion marks that other coins may have due to the production process, storage conditions, and transportation.

What makes a proof coin unique?

It is actually the way the proof coin is made, not the quality of the silver or its status of uncirculated that makes silver proof the highest standard in coin minting. To make a coin, two "dies" strike the surfaces of a blank with tremendous force. One die has the design of the front (obverse) side, and the other die has the design of the back (reverse) side of the coin. Altering the die will give the coin different qualities. In proof coins, the die and therefore the coin can be acid treated in order to have the coveted "cameo" effect. This occurs when the background part of the coin design is highly polished and beautifully reflective, in contrast with the foreground of the coin (the raised part) what is called a "frosted" or matte look. The deeper the cameo, the easier it is to observe the difference between the raised part of the coin and the background. In addition, silver proof coins are also struck two or more times by the die. This gives proof coins a very high degree of detail, coveted by collectors and investors alike. Since the production costs of proof coins are higher, they are often issued in limited runs and usually fetch a higher price than regular uncirculated silver coins, despite the same content of precious metal.
